Speed Survives Saturday Night Short Track Racing in Salem; Finishes Eighth

"The race was crazy! One of the craziest I have ever been in. ...To actually come out of Salem with an 8th-place finish after all that is pretty amazing." -Scott Speed

Salem, IN. (September 15, 2008) – Scott Speed and the No. 2 Red Bull team left Salem, Indiana Saturday night exhausted, with a heavily damaged Toyota Camry, an eighth-place finish and a 90-point lead in the Championship point standings.

"The race was crazy!" said Speed. "One of the craziest I have ever been in. Our car started out good and I thought we were going to be okay. Then we were involved in a wreck and our car was all tore up. The team worked fast in the pits to repair the damage and keep us on the lead lap. To actually come out of Salem with an eighth-place finish after all that is pretty amazing."

Sean Caisse, Speed, and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. ran nose to tail for the first 84 laps. On lap 85, the No. 01 was caught behind a lapped car and Speed and Stenhouse sped past. Speed led for 12 laps before pitting under caution at lap 97 for four tires and fuel. The second half of the race was full of typical short-track short tempers and the hammering out of fenders.

Speed remained on the lead lap for the entire event, despite suffering major damage in the multi-car pile-up on lap 140. As the No. 2 Red Bull Toyota Camry sat on pit road during the red flag, Crew Chief Patrick Donahue and the crew were poised with tools and a plan to repair the car. The crew worked quickly under a series of pit stops and restarted the race in the ninth position. Speed gained a position in the final 54 laps, finishing the night in the eighth-place.

Leading 12 laps in the Saturday night showdown, Speed has now led in 14 of the 18 ARCA RE/MAX Series events this season. The finish marks the team's 13th consecutive top-10 finish. The ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship Point gap between Speed and second-place Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. stretched to 90 points following the Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 by Advanced Auto Parts. Three races remain in the 2008 season.

Long Night under the Indiana Moon; Lofton Finishes 12th at Salem

Salem, IN. (September 15, 2008) –Justin Lofton and the Lofton Cattle team unloaded a fast car on Saturday at Salem Speedway. Unfortunately the No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge was on the receiving end of short-track blunders, leaving the specially designed "cow car" heavily damaged by the checkered flag. Despite it all, it's not too bad when a bad day ends with a 12th-place finish.

"The team and this car deserved a much better finish than this [12th]," said Lofton. "Wayne and the team put together a fantastic car. We made few changes during practice and sat at the top of the chart. Qualifying should have gone better but we were ready and had a car to run to the front as soon as the green flag dropped. Unfortunately we got caught in other people's mistakes and suffered the consequences."

ARCA Chaplain Bill Krick, Lofton and Sheltra at the Cattle Showdown Cookoff

The No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge sported a slightly different look this weekend at Salem Speedway. In honor of the Cattle Showdown Charity Cook-Off, the No. 20 was dressed as a Holstein cow, the same cattle that Lofton Cattle feeds. A Cook-Off featuring the Lofton Holstein and the Sheltra Brisket in a taste test was conducted for ARCA RE/MAX Series officials and team members. Votes were cast and a tie declared. All money collected was donated to Focus Motorsports Ministries, the real winner of the afternoon.

The No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge came to pit road early for adjustments to the car's tight handling. While running in the top-10, contact with another car put the No. 20 into the outside wall. Lofton remained on track until the next caution at lap 97 when he brought the Dodge Charger to pit road for his team to survey the damage. The Lofton Cattle team put four fresh tires, added fuel, and worked on the battered fenders.

The No. 20 remained fast and Lofton was moving back towards the top-10 when the night's "Big One" occurred, causing further damage to the cow. The race was red flagged at lap 140 as race officials worked to clean up the mess on the back stretch. This time Lofton lost a lap as the team worked to return him to the race. The damaged Dodge limped through the remaining laps, finishing 12th and the first car off of the lead lap.

"I'm looking forward to the season's final short-track run at Toledo," stated Lofton. "I think it will be...fun," Lofton added with his usual grin.

Sounds exciting folks! And we would like to disclose at this time, that "No Animals Were Harmed" in this Lofton Cattle Production.

KBIII Finishes 19th; Caught in Salem "Big One"

SALEM, IN. (September 15, 2008) – KBIII and his No. 22 Aaron's Lucky Dog team left Salem, Indiana battered and bruised following the Saturday Night short track racing at Salem Speedway. Butler led the race early but heavy damage from the melee that red flagged the race on lap 139 left the No. 22 barely recognizable and 36 laps down to the leader following green-flag repairs in the pit. KBIII took the checkered flag in the 19th position.

speed

"It's a shame we were caught up in the wreck," said Butler. "We had an extremely fast car all night. We spun out and had to come in early for tires. This gave us great position to take the lead. I think if we hadn't suffered the damage we easily had a top-5 car. The guys worked really hard to get the No. 22 Aaron's Lucky Dog Toyota back on track so that we could finish the race."

The No. 22 Aaron's Lucky Dog Toyota first came to pit road under caution on lap 26 following his spin on lap 24. Taking four tires, fuel, and making a track bar adjustment, the early stop gave KBIII track position when the leaders pitted on lap 97. The No. 22 Aaron's Lucky Dog Toyota took the lead on lap 98 and held it for 17 laps.

On lap 140 the race was red flagged for the "Big One" on the backstretch. The No. 22 Aaron's Lucky Dog Toyota suffered major front end damage. The team went to work as soon as the red flag was lifted and KBIII returned the car to pit road. Over the course of 36 green-flag laps, the Aaron's Lucky Dog team cut off the front fenders, nose, and hood, replaced the radiator and oil cooler, and returned the No. 22 to the track. The Camry ran laps as fast as the leaders and neither gained nor lost positions, finishing the 200-lap race in the 19th position.

"The guys did an excellent job fixing the car and getting it back on track," said Crew Chief Jonathan Davis. "We beat another car back out that was also damaged in the same wreck. I was really proud of them for stepping up and getting the car back out there in only 36 laps. 36 green flag laps at that."

KBIII fell to eighth in the point standings with 3490 points, only 15 points out of sixth and seventh-place (positions are currently tied) and 580 out of fifth.

Mooove it! Justin's No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge

SALEM, IN. (September 13, 2008) –ESR's Justin Lofton, debuting a "cow-themed" paint scheme at Salem Speedway this weekend, steered his No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge to the top of the speed charts during a practice session in preparation for Saturday night's Eddie Gilstrap Motors ARCA Fall Classic.

"I think we have a fast cow," said Lofton. "We unloaded great. Wayne [Carroll, crew chief] did a great job setting the car up before we even came to the track. I knew we'd unload with a great chassis and we just changed the gear once we were here. I think the Lofton Cattle Dodge is going to have a great day and be very competitive tonight."

Following the session, Lofton and Patrick Sheltra turned in their driving suits for aprons. Both drivers are participating in a "Cattle Showdown" fundraiser this afternoon. Members of the ARCA RE/MAX Series garage area will have the opportunity to sample and vote on beef prepared by Lofton Cattle and Sheltra Cattle and all donations will benefit Focus Motorsports Ministries and ARCA Chaplain Bill Krick. Krick made his first appearance to the racetrack this weekend after having heart surgery earlier this season.

ARCA RE/MAX Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 Preview

ESR Heads to Salem for Short Track Showdown

DENVER, N.C. (September 11, 2008) – Scott Speed, Justin Lofton, and Ken Butler, III return this weekend to Salem Speedway for the Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 by Advanced Auto Parts. The pressure is on the talented trio as the conclusion of 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series season approaches. ESR has packed a punch this season with a grand total of five wins, six pole positions, 14 top-5 and 27 top-10 finishes in 17 races.

Speed heads to Salem with a 50-point margin separating him from second-place Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. in the chase to the Championship. Speed also continues to lead the pack for SunTrust Rookie of the Year and Superspeedway Challenge honors. Crew Chief Patrick Donahue is leading the Cometic Crew Chief of the Year standings. Speed's inaugural visit to Salem in April marked the former F1 driver's first short-track stock car start. Speed qualified and finished in the fifth position. Speed has led 395 laps in 13 of the 17 races this season.

Lofton made his ARCA RE/MAX Series debut at Salem in April. The Westmorland, California-native returns to the 0.555-mile paved oval 13th in points after only 16 starts. Lofton has come a long way since that cold and rainy April afternoon. With one win (MIS) and a SIM Factory Pole Award (Cayuga) this season, Lofton is looking forward to returning to Salem where he was very competitive in his debut. Dominating over half of the 200-lap event in the top-10, green flag repairs caused the Lofton Cattle Dodge to fall 12 laps behind the leader and take the checkered flag in the 19th position.

This weekend marks KBIII's fourth start at the Southern Indiana short track in the No. 22 Aaron's Lucky Dog Toyota. In last year's fall event, the No. 22 started in the thirteenth position and after a well-fought effort, took the checkered flag in the eleventh place. KBIII and his Aaron's Lucky Dog team knew they had a car that could win in April 2008. Contact in a multi-car accident put the No. 22 over 40 laps down as the team worked return KBIII to the track. KBIII remained a fast car and finished in the 20th position. KBIII found his first ARCA RE/MAX Series victory lane last year at a short track (Toledo Speedway) and is hungry for his second career win. Following last weekend's tenth-place finish at Chicagoland, KBIII jumped into the 7th position in the ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship point standings.

DRIVER QUOTES: All three ESR drivers are ready to beat and bang in the final 2008 short track showdown at Salem Speedway. Here are some quotes from each of the ESR drivers:
Speed Scott Speed (No. 2 Red Bull Toyota):
"We literally have got to use the best cars we have at the shop each week. We cannot have any mistakes these last four races. If something goes wrong that is out of our control, then so be it, but we have all got to stay calm and do our jobs and hopefully it comes together in the end."

Speed Justin Lofton (No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge):
"I'm really looking forward to returning to Salem. We were really strong in April but just didn't get the finish the car was capable of because we had to pit under green when we had a tire go down. It will be nice to return to where it all started this year and with the experience that I and the team now have under our belts."

Speed Ken Butler, III (No. 22 Aaron's Lucky Dog Dream Machine Toyota):
"With the experience we have as a team now on the short tracks, I am confident that we can run the No. 22 Aaron's Lucky Dog Toyota right up to the front this weekend. At any short track, you need to play it smart, keep the fenders on, and dig deep for patience. We're planning to do just that and make our move at the end."
