Team ESR Drivers Nab Sixth, 14th on the Dirt at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (August 23, 2009)--Eddie Sharp Racing drivers Justin Lofton, Tim George Jr. and Craig Goess hit the track on Sunday for a rare run on a dirt track, running the Allen Crowe 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Though new to the three young drivers, all had solid runs throughout the race. Lofton, making his second appearance on the one-mile track, was the highest finishing ESR driver to cross the stripe in sixth while rookie George Jr. charged home in 14th. Goess also had a solid run going before getting caught up in a melee late in the running, finishing 26th.

After two weeks off from ARCA RE/MAX Series competition, all three ESR teams were ready to get back on track and tackle the challenges of the unique dirt track. Though rookies George Jr. and Goess had never raced on dirt, Lofton familiarized himself with the track last year during his freshman season. With knowledge of the track and momentum from winning the previous two ARCA events, Lofton set the pace in qualifying in the No. 6 Lofton Cattle Toyota, notching his fifth pole award of the season, laying down a new track record. Teammate Goess, in the No. 81 Greenville Toyota of N.C. Toyota lined up 18th and George Jr.'s Ruby Tuesday sponsored Toyota 19th for the start of the 100-lapper.

Craig Goess Jr's No. 81 Camry suffered heavy damage as a result of getting caught up in a wreck and was unable to finish the event.

Lofton quickly flexed his muscle, setting sail around the dirt track for the first 21 laps until a caution flag waved. Under the yellow, Lofton dropped his machine down pitroad. Teammates Goess and George Jr. also opted to use the early caution as an opportunity to get the mandatory pitstop out of the way.

With other teams electing to use a different pit strategy, by the time another caution dropped after lap 40, Lofton had moved to second with Goess cracking the top 10.

As the race hit the halfway mark and under a caution flag, the 81 team opted to make a second stop for fresh tires for the second half of the race. Unfortunately, Goess lined his Toyota up deep in the field for the restart after the stop and got caught up in a wreck. His white No. 81 suffered heavy damage to the front end and despite repairs, was unable to finish the race.

Lofton started from the pole at Springfield

Lofton on the other hand, took advantage of the restart, pouncing on leader, nine-time champion Frank Kimmel for the position. By lap 70, Lofton maneuvered his Lofton Cattle Toyota by Kimmel as they battled a lapped car, reclaiming the lead.

Lofton dominated the next 18 laps before going door-to-door with Parker Kligerman. The two made contact while battling over position, with the left side of Lofton's ride taking a hit. As the laps clicked down, Lofton muscled his machine within the top five, despite the contact and older tires.

Tim George, Jr. brought home a solid result in his run on the dirt.

A late caution flag extended the race in a green-white-checkered flag finish and when all was said and done, Lofton notched his 12th top 10 of the season. Former road racer George Jr. happily landed a solid top 15 in his first ever dirt appearance, finishing 14th.

"We had a winning car but finished sixth. We lost the handle on it late in the running, so that is a bit disappointing but we are still within striking distance and we'll take that with us to Chicago and get them there," said Lofton, who maintains the second position in the point standings.

DRIVER REPORTS
Lofton earns pole, leads laps, grabs top-10; George 14th; Goess chalks one up to experience

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (August 23, 2009)--On Sunday, Justin Lofton continued to showcase his skills behind the wheel of a stockcar, moving from asphalt to the dirt at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in the Allen Crowe 100 ARCA RE/MAX Series event.

In what is becoming a usual display for Lofton, he showed early that his No. 6 Lofton Cattle Toyota was the car to beat. After running consistent lap times throughout the one and only practice session on Sunday morning, Lofton laid down an impressive qualifying lap in 32.552 seconds, a top speed at 110.592 mph, setting a new track record en route to his fifth pole award of the season.

At the drop of the green flag, Lofton guided his No. 6 machine to a lengthy lead, dominating the first 21 laps of the race.

Under the direction of crew chief Mark Rette, Lofton's one and only pitstop fell under a caution flag on lap 22, as he relinquished the lead, for fuel only.

With other lead lap cars opting for different pit strategy, Lofton settled in while stops cycled through. His patience paid off as a caution flag waved just as the race hit the halfway mark. After a restart, Lofton was then able to chase down the leader at the time, Frank Kimmel, making the pass for the lead on lap 69 as the two battled lapped traffic.

Pocono
Lofton's No. 6 Eddie Sharp Racing entry then led the way for the next 18 laps. Gunning for his third straight series win, Lofton gave it everything he had as he battled in the closing laps. But as the racing intensified on the one-mile, clay-surfaced track, the left side tires of Lofton's Toyota suffered a bit of damage after contact with another car while battling for the lead.

The race was extended to 103 laps thanks to a green-white-checkered flag finish following a late caution flag. Despite the damage and used up tires, after leading a race high 40 laps, Lofton guided his machine to another consistent finish, as he crossed the stripe in sixth. The finish provided Lofton with his 12th top-10 run of the season.

"I felt like we hit it pretty good. We got the pole, led a lot of laps, I felt like we were in a good position there. It just fell off a bit towards the end after we got a bit of contact, it just wasn't the same. It's racing. Those things happen. But it really would have been great to get one on dirt," Lofton said.

"We are still within striking distance and we'll take that with us to Chicago and get them there," he added, citing his solid second place position in the point standings.

Rookie Tim George Jr. has a ‘blast,' at his first dirt track

Tim George Jr. cut his racing teeth on road courses, so to say his rookie season in a stock car has been a learning experience, is an extreme understatement. George Jr.'s freshman year in the ARCA RE/MAX Series has been an ongoing lesson from short tracks to superspeedways but this past Sunday may have been his biggest challenge to date, running on the dirt mile at Illinois State Fairgrounds.

"Going into my first dirt race I was skeptical. I didn't know what to expect. During the race I had a blast, and had a true shot at a top ten," George Jr. explained.

George Jr.'s schedule behind the wheel of the No. 2 Ruby Tuesday Toyota at the Springfield, Illinois track was packed, with an early morning practice session leading straight into qualifying. He had solid showings in both, nabbing a 19th place starting spot for the Allen Crowe 100.

Once the green flag dropped, George Jr. stayed consistent, clicking off laps and learning all he could on the slick racing surface. His first pitstop cycled through just after lap 20, handing him yet another challenge.

"Pit lane was very small and difficult to navigate, and we were held up a bit there. The car was pretty good in practice, though a late push off the corner during the race was hurting my passing opportunity."

Despite the obstacles, George Jr. finessed his way through the field and before long, was running within the top 15. Multiple late race caution flags slowed his charge, including a race-extending green-white-checkered flag finish.

George Jr. took advantage of the restarts in the closing laps, maneuvering his No. 2 Ruby Tuesday Toyota into 14th within the final 10 laps. Despite the competition barreling down at the finish, George Jr. fended off the challenges and drove home to a solid top 15 effort at the drop of the checkered flag in his first ever run on dirt.

"I was surprised how the dirt ate up tires, and that seemed to be a deciding factor at the end of the race for the leaders. It felt like driving on rain tires after the track started to dry. All in all a good experience and I look forward to the next dirt race we have," George Jr. said.

George Jr. and the No. 2 Ruby Tuesday Eddie Sharp Racing team will next hit the track this Friday, August 28th, at Chicagoland Speedway for the Ansell Cut Protection 150.

Craig Goess Jr. learns on the dirt at Illinois State Fairgrounds

Pocono

Craig Goess Jr

For Craig Goess Jr., the 2009 season has been filled with a lot of excitement and a lot of success in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. Goess recorded another first this past weekend at the Illinois State Fairgrounds (IL) as he took part in the first of the two annual dirt races for the ARCA stars. Although he finished 26th, that didn't show the true measure of how much fun his first experience with dirt was.

"It was really interesting," said Goess. "I didn't have anything to base it off of. I have never run dirt before this past weekend. I would be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to getting back on the pavement at Chicago. We still had fun; you can't do any more than that when you're not accustomed to something."

Goess had an off lap in qualifying as his 18th-place starting position was his worst of the 2009 season. Nevertheless, Goess began working his way to the front before trouble found him near the halfway point. "We could have had a top-10, top-15 finish if we didn't get caught up in someone else's mess," added Goess. "After the race I really got to talk to my crew chief (Patrick Donahue) about running laps on dirt and what we could have done for a setup. We know that we are going to be better when we go to DuQuoin."

Goess looks forward to the chance at redemption as the ARCA cars will be back on the dirt on September 7th at DuQuoin State Fairgrounds (IL).

Craig Goess Jr will be back in action this coming weekend with the ARCA RE/MAX series at the Chicagoland Motor Speedway (IL) on Saturday, August 29th.

Lofton Sixth in Practice at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (August 23, 2009)--Eddie Sharp Racing's Justin Lofton was sixth fastest among 36 drivers who took times during an hour-long practice session at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois, on Sunday afternoon. .

"This weekend is my third time on dirt," said Lofton. "By no means am I an expert-Mark [Rette, Crew Chief] did a great job putting the car together. What we have is a lot better than what we came with last year. I'm just kind of learning and really leaning on Eddie [Sharp, car owner] and trying to remember how the track progresses throughout the day. Every lap we went out there the track was really different. Mark [Rette] would make a change and I would go out there and he would ask how it was and I replied back I wish I could tell you because the track has changed that much in the last five minutes. It was good. It's definitely going to be a tough race but it will definitely be exciting and hopefully we put on a good show."

DRIVER PREVIEWS
Lofton looks to make it three straight, add dirt track to wins list

DENVER, N.C. (August 19, 2009) – 23-year-old Justin Lofton heads to the dirt track at Illinois State Fairgrounds this weekend for the Allen Crowe 100 riding a wave of momentum. Lofton, driver of the No. 6 Lofton Cattle Toyota for Eddie Sharp Racing, has shown his diversity in recent weeks, winning the last two ARCA RE/MAX Series races spanning the short track in Berlin and the 2.5-mile speedway in Pocono.

Adding to his repertoire, Lofton made his debut in the NASCAR Nationwide Series last week at Michigan International Speedway, qualifying 19th and finishing an impressive 16th.

"We had a blast at Michigan. I couldn't have asked for anything better. Having Mark (Rette, crew chief) and all of the guys with me, made it a lot less stressful. They did great work on the car. Overall, it was just a lot of fun," Lofton said.

"We proved we can run with those guys and now we're focused on winning this ARCA championship. We have a lot of momentum working for us.

Lofton will be making his second start on the one-mile track in Springfield. Last season he maneuvered his way from a 34th starting spot but as he was making his climb through the field, another car spun and Lofton was left with nowhere to go, getting collected in the melee. After repairs, he returned to the track, finishing 24th.

"Last year was a learning experience for sure. I feel like I've grown a lot as a driver since then. All of the guys are pumped up to get back to the ARCA garage and see if we can add a win there to keep things rolling."

Lofton currently sits second in the point standings, just 20 points out of the lead.

The 100-miler at Springfield begins at 1 P.M. on Sunday with live coverage on ARCARacing.com.

George Jr. anxious to get racing again, looking forward to first dirt appearance

Pocono

DENVER, N.C. (August 19, 2009) – After two weeks off, Tim George Jr. is ready to get back behind the wheel of his No. 2 Ruby Tuesday Toyota at Illinois State Fairgrounds for the Allen Crowe 100 ARCA RE/MAX Series event. This weekend however, will be a challenge for the Eddie Sharp Racing rookie, as it marks the first time that the established road racer will race on a dirt track.

"This weekend will be my first time on dirt in any type of car. I have driven road course cars in the rain, and I am hoping that the experience will help," he said.

"I have a feeling Springfield will be a handful applying all that power, but I am looking forward to the car control practice. It is a one day show, so it will be important to learn quickly."

George Jr. spent his downtime over the last two weeks testing on a road course in New Jersey following the Pocono event, unofficially clocking in the third fastest time behind NASCAR regulars Michael McDowell and Chris Cook. Following the test, he returned to his native New York. There, he was the guest of honor for a launch party for Social Life magazine. This month, George Jr. is the magazine's cover model and has a six page spread for the lifestyle magazine.

With the hiatus in the ARCA schedule over, George Jr. is anxious for another new experience in a stock car. Before hitting the one-mile dirt track however, he will climb back behind the wheel to re-familiarize himself with his No. 2 Ruby Tuesday Toyota, participating in an open practice at Chicagoland Speedway in preparation for the upcoming race on August 28th. He'll then head to Springfield for Sunday's one-day event on the clay-surfaced track.

Versatile ARCA RE/MAX Series Switches to Dirt

The ARCA RE/MAX Series will transition to dirt track racing on Sunday, August 23 for the Allen Crowe 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois. The race marks the 14th of 21 events on the 2009 schedule and the first of two dirt track events for the ARCA RE/MAX Series in 2009. Anatomy of a Dirt Car
An ARCA RE/MAX Series racecar prepared for the Illinois State Fairground might look slightly different from an ARCA RE/MAX Series racecar prepared for a superspeedway such as Chicagoland or a paved short track such as Toledo, even though the core set of technical rules that teams must adhere to do not change from race to race. For the dirt tracks, teams often equip their racecars with shakers made of screen on their front grille to prevent dirt from collecting and causing overheating issues, angular sheet metal rock deflectors attached to the hood and many Series drivers take rags with them in the car to clean dust residue from the inside of the windshield.

"For the most part we bring a car that we could race at a short track," said Patrick Donahue, Crew Chief of the No. 81 Greenville Toyota of North Carolina Toyota driven by Craig Goess. "I'm bringing the same car that I raced last year with Scott Speed. We have come up with a real simple package that we can put on any of the cars. We put a screen under the car in front of the motor to help keep dirt or mud from getting up into the belt on the motor. Then we put pieces of screen behind the front tires to keep stuff from getting packed up under the car."

In addition, Springfield and DuQuoin are the only two tracks on the ARCA RE/MAX Series tour in which Hoosier supplies teams with bias ply tires instead of radial tires.
