Craig Goess Scores Second Place and Valuable Points in Tim Richmond 200
Continues trek towards ARCA Racing Series Championship
|
MANSFIELD, Ohio (July 19, 2010) - Consistency seems to be Craig Goess' middle name this season. As the ARCA Racing Series rolled into Mansfield, Ohio last weekend, Goess looked to continue his steady journey to the top of the point standings. He didn't disappoint, bringing home a second-place finish in the Tim Richmond 200 in the No. 81 Toyota of Greenville N.C. Eddie Sharp Racing Toyota. In 10 races this season, he has five top-five finishes and seven top-10s.
Goess was fourth quickest in the only practice of the day, with a time of 16.687 seconds (107.868 mph). The No. 81 ESR team made adjustments before qualifying, which proved successful as Goess laid down the third quickest qualifying lap of 16.589 seconds (108.506 mph).
As the green flag fell on the Tim Richmond 200, Goess was confident in the car, the team and his skills.
"The car improved between practice and qualifying, and I knew the car had the speed to compete for the victory," said Goess
With five cautions slowing the field for a total of 40 laps, the loose No. 81 Toyota of Greenville had a hard time maintaining short runs.
"We had some bad luck in the pits, but we were able to fight back from it," explained Goess. "The guys put together a good car. I just wish we could have had a long run."
|
The No. 81 raced at the front of the pack for much of the race, taking the lead for five laps when the leaders pit under the fourth of five cautions.
With 48 laps to go, the 17-year-old pole-sitter Max Gresham took the lead for the final time and took the checkered flag. Goess crossed the finish line second, his fifth top-five and seventh top-10 of the season.
"The car was loose for most of the race, but once we got going on long runs on a green flag, the car could really get to where it needed to be," said Goess. "Unfortunately, it just took too long for the car to get on a roll, and the cautions really hurt us. All things considered, I think we had a good race and picked up the points we needed to."
Goess' second-place finish shot him up one more spot in the ARCA Racing Series point standings. With nine more races in the 2010 season, Goess is 50 points behind leader Justin Marks.
With this upcoming weekend off, the ARCA Racing Series will head to Pocono Raceway on July 31 for the Weis Markets 125. Goess will return to the "Tricky Triangle" to defend his victory at Pocono, after his first career ARCA Racing Series victory on June 5. The 125-mile race will be broadcast live on SPEED at 3 p.m. EST, with live scoring, timing and audio broadcast on ARCARacing.com.

Craig Goess, Jr. |
|
Denver, NC (July 14, 2010) –Craig Goess and the Eddie Sharp Racing No. 81 Greenville Toyota of N.C. Toyota will take the track in the Tim Richmond Memorial ARCA 200 at Mansfield Motorsports Park on Saturday, July 17, 2010.
Last Race: Iowa: Under the lights at Iowa Speedway last Saturday, Goess took eighth place after battling an ill-handling car for most of the race. The race, broadcast live on SPEED, began with Goess making his 30th-career ARCA Racing Series start in the sixth position. Although the No. 81 struggled with adjustments for most of the night, Goess was consistent throughout the race, remaining calm and staying out of trouble. He stayed in the top-15 for the entire race while battling brake vibrations and an ill-handling car. After many attempts, Goess was finally able to pass the No. 32 of Justin Marks to take over the eighth position. The lead pack had a considerable lead at that point, and Goess crossed the finish line in the eighth position.
Goess at Mansfield: Goess has one previous ARCA Racing Series start at Mansfield Motorsports Park. In June 2009, Goess competed at the half-mile track in the No. 81, where he qualified 11th and finished in the 10th position. Goess also competed at the Mansfield, Ohio track in 2008 in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. In the field of 26 cars, Goess started 10th and worked his way up to a fifth-place finish.
In the Points: Six top-10s this season, including his eighth place finish in Iowa, helped Goess move up one spot in the championship standings to third. He is only 30 points out of second and 140 behind Justin Marks at the top of the point standings.
Meet Craig Goess: Goess will participate in the ARCA Racing Series autograph session Saturday. Fans have the opportunity to meet Goess and the rest of the ARCA Racing Series drivers Saturday from 6 - 7 p.m. on the track. For more information, go to www.ARCARacing.com.

QUOTES
Goess on running at Mansfield Motorsports Park:
"Mansfield is a good track for us. We got our first top five in 2008 in the K&N Pro Series East car after a couple of starts. We had a bit of damage there last year and still managed to finish sixth. We are going to have a better car there this year, so I'm looking forward to it. It should be pretty sporty."

Inaugural Tim Richmond Memorial ARCA-RE/MAX 200

|
Tim Richmond |
|
Tim Richmond, a native of Ashland, Ohio, is often referred to as one of the most talented race car drivers who set foot on a track. From go-carts to NASCAR, he could drive anything!
Tim Richmond's path to stardom began on Ohio short tracks
Tim Richmond was blessed with gifts that made him destined for greatness on and off the race track. With the support of a loving family, father - Al, mother - Evelyn and sister - Sondra, it was not long before that greatness was revealed.
He demonstrated he had star quality from an early age. He was a star athlete at his high school, Miami Military Academy. He set a conference record in high hurdles and was such an outstanding football player that his high school retired his jersey and named him Athlete of the Year in 1970.
The life and times of Richmond
Tim would have turned 54 on June 7. As a youth, Richmond had an interest in things that went fast starting with go-karts, as a boy and graduated to cars and airplanes as a teen. His parents gave him a Pontiac Trans Am for his
16th birthday.
Surely an occasional street race or zipping up and down nearby Interstate 71 wasn't enough to satisfy his need for speed and performance. Still, it wasn't until age 22 when he got into his first real racecar owned by a friend in 1976. He first drove a dirt Sprint car at Lakeville, Ohio. He showed some talent that season, but wrecked several times, too.
The next season, his dad purchased a Supermodified, a unique pavement open-wheel race car featured at few tracks. One track in Ohio ran them on a weekly basis, Sandusky Speedway on Ohio's "north coast" near Lake Erie. Richmond went on to be the division's champion and rookie of the year.
1978: Richmond switched to USAC Sprint Cars and won a Mini-Indy Series event at Phoenix which grabbed the attention of IndyCar owners. Richmond made his first IndyCar start at Michigan in 1979 but finished last due to a blown engine. But his path had taken him into the major leagues of open-wheel racing.
1980: Richmond entered his first Indianapolis 500, and in a story book finish, Richmond finished ninth despite running out of fuel in the final laps. Johnny Rutherford won the race and had Richmond jump on the side-pod of his car for a ride back to the pits as he was completing his victory lap. Both drivers were elated, and Indianapolis' sophisticated IndyCar crowd vocally celebrated both drivers' accomplishments.
A series of wrecks in the following races didn't discourage Tim, but his parents agreed they would be happy if he stopped racing altogether. |
