Accidents plague ESR teams

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (May 3, 2008) - "The Rock" proved to be a hard place itself at Sunday's inaugural running of the Carolina 500 at Rockingham Speedway. None of ESR's three teams were able to complete more than half the race's 312 laps.

Justin Lofton's promising second row start evaporated in an accident on lap 63. Teammate Ken Butler III suffered a similar fate 51 laps later, and Scott Speed managed to get his Red Bull car to only the 152nd lap before accident damage ended his day as well.

Next Stop: Scott, Ken, Justin and their respective Eddie Sharp Racing teams travel to Sparta, Kentucky this weekend for the Drive Smart! Buckle Up Kentucky 150. The green flag drops at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2008.

POST RACE REPORTS

Speed's Rocky Day at Rockingham

d

Scott Speed

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (May 4, 2008) – Scott Speed’s first race at the high-banked Rockingham Speedway was short and not-so-sweet. Speed’s No. 2 Red Bull Toyota was collected in a multi-car incident on lap 10 of the inaugural Carolina 500. Eddie Sharp Racing’s Red Bull crew worked feverishly on the car for over 100 laps, returning to the track and finishing the day in the 35th position.

“Today just wasn’t what we had hoped it would be,” said Speed. “We certainly hoped that we would carry the success from last week here. Unfortunately, we were caught up in the first big mess of the day and just did what we could to lose as few points as possible. I just want to thank the team for all their hard work today. We’ll put this behind us and look forward to Kentucky next weekend.”

No. 2 Car Crew Chief Patrick Donahue will be featured each week on INSIDE ARCA Tuesday nights from 7-8:30 pm ET. The show is broadcast LIVE on local radio in the NW Ohio/SE Michigan market and on arcaracing.com . Patrick appears in the second segment (approximately 7:30 p.m. ET)

Following a conservative qualifying lap, Speed took the green flag for the Carolina 500 in the 25th position. By lap 10, Speed climbed into the top-15. Poised for what was anticipated to be a very good afternoon, Speed was collected in the lap-10 melee resulting from a spinning lapped car on the backstretch.

The crew brought the car to the pit to ascertain the damage, consequently taking it back to the garage for repairs. The team replaced the right-front suspension, fixed the radiator, and cut off all of the damaged sheet metal. The Red Bull Toyota returned to the track following 110 laps of garage-time.

Back on track, Crew Chief Patrick Donahue encouraged his driver by tracking and reporting the number of laps and spots that the No. 2 was gaining. Restarting in the 45th position, the hard work of the Red Bull crew paid off as the No. 2 Toyota Camry gained 10 spots, climbing to the 35th position by the race’s end. It was still a costly finish, Speed fell four spots to the eighth position in ARCA RE/MAX Series championship points, 220 points behind leader Matt Carter.

Not-So-Happy Birthday for KB3

d

Ken Butler III

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (May 4, 2008) – Ken Butler, III had high hopes of a happy birthday weekend. KBII celebrated his 26th birthday on Friday with his family and teammates. The weekend started positive with a strong qualifying run on Saturday for KBIII, putting the No. 22 Aaron’s Lucky Dog Dream Machine in the ninth position for Sunday’s Carolina 500. Initially damaged in Sunday’s multi-car wreck on lap 10, Butler, III continued to struggle for the remainder of the race. Hard contact on lap 120 ended the day for the Aaron’s Dream Machine team and resulted in a 39th-place finish at Rockingham Speedway.

“What a disappointing way to finish such an exciting weekend,” said Butler, III. “It was thrilling to race the ‘Rock’. After our strong qualifying run yesterday, we were looking forward to a good finish today. It’s such a shame because my team works so hard and Aaron’s helps us out so much. I wanted to run well for them today so I just hate the way things turned out.”

Butler, III turned a 143.954 mph lap on Saturday in the first round of qualifying, landing a ninth starting position for Sunday’s return of stock car racing at Rockingham Speedway. Unfortunately, shortly after the green flag dropped for the Carolina 500, the streak of bad luck began for the No. 22 Aaron’s Lucky Dog Dream Machine team.

Butler, III received front-end damage to the No. 22 Toyota in the day’s first caution at lap 10. KBIII reported on the radio that the “nose is a bit crushed up.” The team worked to fix the damage during the caution laps and keep their driver on the lead lap. The front-end damage caused a subsequent tire rub which required the No. 22 to come back to pit road for new tires and additional work. Miscommunication cost the team laps as the No. 22 failed to get back on the track ahead of the pace car during the caution laps.

Unable to secure the fender off of the front tires, the team quickly went to work in the pits to construct a new nose piece for the Toyota Camry while KBIII remained on the high-banked track turning laps. The car’s handling continued to deteriorate and Butler, III reported that the car was “tight, tight, tight,” and that the brakes were declining with each lap.

During the caution at lap 112, Crew Chief Wayne Carroll continued to tell his driver that “no we are not pitting. We’re still building this nose down here. We’ll get you in under the next caution, KB, just try to hold on.”

Team owner Eddie Sharp keyed the radio and worked to encourage his driver and give him his priorities by stating, “KB, Superman couldn’t keep that thing down on the line right now. Your job now is to keep the car in one piece and finish the race. Run laps, be patient, and just finish the race.”

Unfortunately, the next caution on lap 120 involved the No. 22. This week the Aaron’s Lucky Dog Dream Machine was not-so-lucky. KB reported to his team after the contact that “we’re done.” Butler, III limped the car back to the garage having completed 114 of the 312 laps and finishing in the 39th position. The finish placed KBIII in the tenth position in ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship points, 275 points behind the leader.

“I hate it for my guys,” stated Butler, III following the race. “It is so heartbreaking to watch the car loading on the truck before the checkered flag has dropped. But we will put this behind us and focus on Kentucky. I like Kentucky a lot and am really looking forward to getting back there. The ESR cars are strong on the mile and a half tracks so we should have a very positive weekend.”

Stellar Start; Rough Finish for Lofton

d

Justin Lofton

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (May 4, 2008) – The temperature wasn’t the only thing that was hot this weekend at Rockingham Speedway. Justin Lofton solidly landed the No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge landed in the third starting position for the Carolina 500 at Rockingham Speedway. He moved quickly into second and looked to be one of the dominating factors in Sunday’s race. High hopes came to a crashing halt when lapped cars spinning on the backstretch collected Lofton and other front-running cars. The Lofton Cattle team worked to keep the Lofton on track, but succumbed to the damage and retired in the 43rd position.

“It was just a very frustrating day,” stated Lofton. “To have such a great qualifying lap and to start on the second row shows the caliber of the team we truly are. It is just so unfortunate that we were caught up in a mess caused by lapped traffic on lap 10. We had a very strong car that was more than capable of contending for the win if we had been there at the end.”

Lofton was all smiles as he climbed into the car and buckled in for the grueling 312 lap race. Only ten laps later, Lofton was limping the No. 20 back to the garage for repairs, a victim of the melee caused by already lapped cars.

Justin Lofton was the second-to-last car to go out for qualifying. The No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge ripped off a 24.693 second lap to put him 3rd on the starting grid. Lofton was all smiles as he climbed into the car and buckled in for the grueling 312 lap race. Only ten laps later, Lofton was limping the No. 20 back to the garage for repairs, a victim of the melee caused by already lapped cars.

The Lofton Cattle team worked feverishly to put the No. 20 back on the track in order to retain as many positions as possible. Knowing they were running at a far slower speed than the leaders, Dan Fusaro, spotter for the No. 20, worked to communicate with other teams as to avoid further conflict. Fusaro received word that one particular team wanted the high side when they came past the Lofton Cattle Dodge. Lofton complied and when the car approached him, he moved to the low side. Unfortunately, the driver dove to the inside, despite the hand gestures of Lofton, directing him to the high side as the spotter had requested. Hard contact between the two ended the day for the Lofton Cattle team.

“It was a very unfortunate day for the Lofton Cattle Dodge and Eddie Sharp Racing,” said Lofton. “We had very fast car today. But, there is nothing we can do now. We will pack up, hold our heads high, and head to Kentucky next weekend. As a team we are getting better and better each week. I think we will be very strong at Kentucky and I am really looking forward to racing there.”

DRIVER QUOTES

d

May 2: Happy Birthday KBIII!
(Yes, he is competitive...)

Ken Butler, III (No. 22 Aaron’s Lucky Dog Toyota) “We struggled for about two hours this afternoon. We worked really hard to get the car the best we could on old tires. The key here will be to keep it on the bottom and find consistency on old tires.”

Scott Speed (No. 2 Red Bull Toyota) “Everyone seems to be struggling today. We’re going to stick to a conservative qualifying effort tomorrow. It’s a long race so we are planning to stay out of trouble for about the first 200 laps. Then we will step up and go racing.”

Justin Lofton (No. 20 Lofton Cattle Dodge) “We were just sliding everywhere today. We had absolutely no grip and started practice extremely loose. The team worked really hard to get the car drivable. Although it doesn’t show on the speed charts, we should be good in Sunday’s race.”

SIM Factory Pole Qualifying will occur tomorrow in two sessions. First Round Qualifying for positions 1-25 will take place beginning at 10:00 a.m. Second Round of Qualifying for positions 26-41 starts at 2:30 p.m. Final Practice follows on Saturday, May, 3rd from 5-6 p.m.

Driver Introductions begin Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. and the green flag for the Carolina 500k at Rockingham Speedway drops at 12:00 p.m. and will be broadcast LIVE on SPEED. All times listed are EASTERN.

BOWLING(?)
NO. 2 RED BULL TEAM FINDS YET ANOTHER VICTORY LANE

Unintimidated by opponent's fancy equipment, takes down Sheltra Motorsports 809 to 686

d

Tiremaster Wesley "Mitch" Jones, mechanic Rocky Rhine and truck driver Tom Daddio

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (May 3, 2008) – The No. 2 Red Bull team took to the bowling lanes Friday night following their day at Rockingham Speedway. The same team that celebrated in Victory Lane one week ago, found domination Friday night at the Sandhills Bowling Center, beating Sheltra Motorsports by a phenomenal 809 points to 686.

“I was a little worried,” commented Rocky “Earl Anthony” Rhine. “I hadn’t bowled in about ten years. I wasn’t sure how the artificial hip would take it.”

Scott Speed had the high score for the Red Bull team, bowling a 201. “It was really exciting to see a group of people come together when the pressure was on and we had a little something on the line. We’re a pressure team!”

Red Bull team mechanic Ryan Chism had the second highest score for the Red Bull Team with a 180. “We had to overcome adversity. Four of the Sheltra Motorsports team members had their own bowling balls and shoes. We were limited to house balls, yet we still stepped up and found victory on another fast lane.”

Tom Daddio, driver of the Red Bull hauler for Eddie Sharp Racing, commented “I gave the boys a little pep talk.” Daddio also added with a laugh that “Scott’s bowling style is very erratic. There is nothing pretty about it. Absolutely nothing stylish except for the dance coming back!”

The team had a great time bonding and smack-talking off the track. Competitive in all forms of sport, the No. 2 Red Bull Team is geared up for a season of fun and dominance on and off the asphalt!

RACE PREVIEW
ESR READY TO ROCK "THE ROCK"

DENVER, N.C. (May 1, 2008) - Eddie Sharp Racing heads to Rockingham Speedway this weekend looking to capitalize on the momentum from a very strong appearance at Kansas Speedway. Although ESR drivers Scott Speed, Ken Butler, III and Justin Lofton will be making their debuts at the ‘Rock' this weekend, team owner Eddie Sharp is old friends with the legendary track. In February 1993, Sharp made his first NASCAR Nationwide Series start in the Goodwrench 200.

Former driver, now team owner Eddie Sharp

"I remember that qualifying was rained out and it was freezing cold," said Sharp with a chuckle. "There were icicles hanging from the rigs. It was a big deal for me and a big chance. I wasn't in a competitive car, but just the opportunity to do it was huge. There were drivers on that track that I had always admired and looked up to, for example [Dale] Earnhardt, Sr."

Sharp continued that "It was more than just the chance to race at Rockingham. It put me here; where I am today. I'm still chasing the dream, just a slightly altered dream. Back then, I couldn't afford a good car to drive. Now I have 40 great cars in my shop, but I don't drive them. I own them and get to help other young, talented drivers with opportunities that I didn't have."

Eddie Sharp returns to the Rock with a team of very talented young drivers in his ESR stable - Scott Speed, Ken Butler, III and Justin Lofton. All three drivers cut their teeth on the recently resurrected one-mile oval track at the ARCA RE/MAX Series open test session early this year. Scott Speed, winner of last weekend's Kansas Lottery $150 Grand, sat at the top of the speed charts on the second day of testing. Teammates Justin Lofton and Kansas pole-winner Ken Butler, III also posted fast times during the open test.

Justin Lofton and Ken Butler, III will join some of their fellow ARCA RE/MAX Series drivers signing autographs at the Rockingham ThunderFest event in Downtown Rockingham on Thursday, May 1, 2008, from 6-7 p.m.

ARCA RE/MAX Series practice runs from 2-5 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2008. SIM Factory Pole Qualifying will occur in two sessions on Saturday May, 3rd.

DRIVER QUOTES:
speed Scott Speed (No. 2 Red Bull Toyota):
"We were really happy with our testing here in March. We struggled the first day, but got the kinks worked out on Saturday and had a very fast car. I'm looking forward to getting back on track here. We have a lot of momentum from last weekend's win at Kansas and we will definitely be carrying that into this weekend. My guys work really hard each week and I really appreciate it."
speed Ken Butler, III (No. 22 Aaron's Lucky Dog Dream Machine Toyota):
"I'm really looking forward to racing at Rockingham. This track has a lot of history and means a lot to the sport of stock car racing. Our Aaron's Lucky Dog Toyota was pretty good here at the test session. My guys have done a great job this year. We unload fast at every track and I don't doubt we will be strong this weekend. I'm so happy I was able to get them the pole last weekend and can't wait to give them the win they deserve!"
speed Justin Lofton (No. 93 Lofton Cattle Dodge):
"First I want to thank my team for all of the hard work and extra hours they put in this week. We had a lot of work to do on the Lofton Cattle Dodge and they dug in and never quit. Ken and Scott had a great weekend at Kansas, but I think it's our turn. I think we will be very good here. We had a strong test here in March and I have the fullest confidence that we will unload on Friday and get the car dialed in quickly."
